INTRODUCTION
BOLD is an online product that offers a tools to help job seekers to build their resume, cover letter and look for jobs. I worked for a resume builder team and led the end-to-end design of the “AI content editing” feature to shorten and lengthen the resume for mobile web app, aiming to boost users’ confidence in their final resume and leading to higher conversion of the product. We worked on building this feature to both desktop and mobile simultaneously and I was in change of designing mobile and worked with mobile PM and dev team. The new feature successfully launched in Q3 2025.

TIMELINE

PROBLEM STATEMENT
How long should a resume be?
The problem is that job seekers are expected to fit their resumes onto 1 or 2 pages, which requires our users to spend significant time on manual editing and formatting on the finalize page. This is a problem because the lack of automated tools for this process leads to user frustration and increases churn. After adding content this final round of editing to make the final look and feel of the resume meet standards is taxing and time-consuming.
Entry to mid-level candidates
If a job seeker is early in their career or has under 10 years of experience, a one-page resume is typically ideal.

Experienced candidates
If a job seeker has 10+ years of experience or significant, relevant achievements, a two-page resume is often appropriate.

BREAKDOWN OF THE PROBLEM
navigation (1).png
Cumbersome editing flow
In the old experience, users had to navigate through multiple steps to edit each section of their resume. This repetitive process created friction and increased user frustration.

No real-time content updates on resume
Since edits required jumping between steps, users couldn’t see real-time content updates on their resume. This disconnect made it difficult to understand the impact of their changes.

Lack of resume length visibility
There was no clear way for users to see how long their resume was during editing. Page breaks weren’t visible in the editor, so users often discovered after downloading that their resume was too short or didn’t meet expected length.
USER RESEARCH
Understanding what our users’ expectations are
While experienced users have hard time condense their resume to fit a certain page count, less experienced users struggle to fill their resume to make it one full page. These insights were gathered by our UX researcher, who analyzed user behavior across 18 different projects.
Experienced users want...
To condense their resumes
To remove unnecessary information
To achieve target page count
To avoid resume that is over 2-3 pages
Users with little experience want...
To fill out their resumes
To know what to include in their resumes
To add relevant skills for their jobs
To remove white space in resume
Based on our research, we set our project goal to integrate AI-powered real-time content adjustments directly within the resume template on the Finalize page. By leveraging AI, we will empower users to effortlessly optimize their resumes, ensuring they meet the desired page count and adhere to formatting requirements.
OUR SOLUTION
Create an easy way to help job seekers to adjust resume length
AI-driven suggestions would dynamically shorten or lengthen sections as needed providing users with instant feedback on how changes impact the overall length and template. Product manager, AI team and the design team had collaborated and decided on MVP and key features for first test.
DESIGN DECISION / MVP
Sectional Edit for limited section
We introduced sectional editing, allowing users to edit specific sections which are "Work History" and "Professional Summary". These sections typically contain the most detailed content, so focusing on them made the editing process faster and manageable.
Generate up to 3 AI suggestions
We provided up to three AI-generated suggestions, giving users multiple options to choose from based on their preferences. All suggestions were saved, allowing users to revisit, edit, or switch between them at any time.
Revert to original content
To give users full control, we added a "Reset to Original" button, allowing them to easily revert back after applying AI suggestions. This feature ensures users can confidently explore edits without worrying about losing their original content.

USER TESTING
Entry points: improving feature discoverability by rethinking an AI term
We conducted usability testing with 12 users via UserTesting.com to evaluate three variants of the AI Edit entry point. Although most users noticed the CTA labeled “AI Tools,” 75% misunderstood its purpose and didn’t realize it allowed for content editing, often skipping it entirely. This revealed a critical discoverability issue. To address it, I collaborated with a UX writer to rename the label to “Length,” which better reflected the feature’s function. Additionally, we removed variant 1 from further testing due to its low CTA visibility.

Refining AI edit mode: Testing Layout and Interaction Preferences
We also tested three AI edit mode variants to evaluate layout and editing preferences - specifically, whether users preferred seeing both “shorten” and “lengthen” options, and whether they wanted to edit one section at a time or multiple. Most users clearly favored having both content options visible, leading us to remove variant 3. Since there was no strong preference around editing flow, we decided to A/B test Variants 1 and 2 moving forward.
